You know how the online community is sometimes wowed with the emergence of services with new technologies and ideas like Google Maps, Google Earth, and YouTube? The one that I’m looking forward to the most is “Automatic Translation”.

Right now, if an English site comes up while you’re searching (in Japanese), there’s a little button that says [Translate this page]. Yes, the translation is still very underdeveloped. I’m not asking for it to be perfect, but wouldn’t it be exciting if the translation was just “a little bit better” AND automatic?

I always find lists useful. They allow me to have access to resources that others found useful, therefore saving hours of research. So I thought, why not start my own series of lists?

I won’t be able to write as many lists as I would like, as fast as I would like to write them.  I will do it monthly to make sure that they are seriously useful to you.

A volunteer translation project sprang up and translated all of Mochio Umeda’s book “Watching Shogi from Silicon Valley – Habu Yoshiharu and Modern Times” (シリコンバレーから将棋を観る-羽生善治と現代) into English in under a week.

Yoshiharu Habu is a highly-respected professional shogi (also known as Japanese chess) player. Easily the most recognizable figure in all things shogi, he is regarded by some as the ultimate strategist of our time. Mochio Umeda is a Silicon Valley-based VC, whom Asiajin calls Japan’s leading web visionary. He is the author of the bestselling book ‘Web Shinkaron’ (Theory of Web Evolution), covered by GV here in 2007.
